Isamay Benavente, the first woman to direct the Teatro de la Zarzuela

Presentada por el director del INAEM, Joan Francesc Marco y acompañada por su antecesor Daniel Blanco, la hasta ahora directora del Teatro Villamarta de Jerez de la Frontera, es la primera mujer elegida en ciento sesenta y siete años para dirigir el histórico teatro. Los tiempos van cambiando. Ahora hace trío con los Teatros Fernán Gómez y los Teatros del Canal, también dirigidos por mujeres.

Presented by the director of the INAEM, Joan Francesc Marco and accompanied by his predecessor Daniel Blanco, the until now director of the Villamarta Theater in Jerez de la Frontera, is the first woman chosen in one hundred and sixty-seven years to direct the historic theater. Isamay Brenavente  es una mujer con gran experiencia y conocimiento en gestión teatral, desde los tiempos de la Expo de Sevilla de 1982, en la que ejerció como técnica de producción y distribución; montó el primer ballet andaluz de flamenco y fue su directora de producción. En 1996 llegó a Jerez como directora de producción de Fundarte, (Fundación Cultural Universitaria de las Artes en Jerez) empresa gestora del Teatro Villamarta. En 2008 se incorporó a la dirección artística del  teatro, donde creó el proyecto Centro Lírico del Sur con programación de una temporada lírica, con inclusión del Otoño Lírico Jerezano que contó entre otras cosas con cuatro montajes de zarzuela. Creadora del Concurso de Voces para repertorio español; directora artística del Festival Flamenco de Jerez. Desde septiembre 2022 presidenta de la Asociación de Teatros y Temporadas Líricas de España, Ópera XXI; vicepresidenta de la Asociación de Festivales Flamencos.

Isamay Brenavente is a woman with extensive experience and knowledge in theater management, from the time of the Seville Expo in 1982, in which she worked as a production and distribution technician; In 1996 she arrived in Jerez as production director of Fundarte, (University Cultural Foundation for the Arts in Jerez) the management company of the Teatro Villamarta. In 2008 he joined the artistic direction of the theatre, where he created the Centro Lírico del Sur project with a program for a lyrical season, including the Otoño Lírico Jerezano, which featured, among other things, four zarzuela productions. Creator of the Voice Contest for Spanish repertoire; artistic director of the Jerez Flamenco Festival. Since September 2022 president of the Association of Theaters and Lyrical Seasons of Spain, Ópera XXI; Vice President of the Association of Flamenco Festivals.

Durante su exposición, Isamay Benavente anunció sus compromisos prioritarios. Algunos en línea de continuidad con rutas ya marcadas por el director saliente Daniel Blanco, como rescatar zarzuelas olvidadas o nunca representadas.

Como tronco estructural de su trabajo está dar prioridad absoluta al fomento de la zarzuela en España y en el extranjero. [Comento, un extraordinario género lirico español, que de no haber sido español sería tan conocido y demandado en todos los teatros líricos del mundo, ¿por qué no? como la ópera italiana o alemana, precisamente por sus elementos de distinción.] Comenta la nueva directora: “La zarzuela es el género lírico español que refleja la idiosincrasia de nuestro carácter y costumbres en todas las regiones de España.”

También se comprometió a fomentar la danza, creando más espacios a este fin. “Hay compañías que están haciendo un trabajo impresionante y vamos a integrarlas en la programación de la Zarzuela su espacio”.

Muy importante, atraer cada vez más a un público joven, minoritario en este teatro. [Comento, tarea nada fácil, mientras la educación musical no forme parte de la enseñanza en España desde la primaria, como sucede en países de nuestro entorno.]

Resumiendo prioridades: Fortalecimiento de nuestra zarzuela, de la danza, de las relaciones con instituciones nacionales e internacionales, de atraer público joven, de dar visibilidad a las mujeres en el ámbito de la dirección escénica. No es poco para empezar.

Summarizing priorities: Strengthening of our zarzuela, of dance, of relations with national and international institutions, of attracting young audiences, of giving visibility to women in the field of stage direction. Not little to start with.

Como era de esperar, alabó la labor de Daniel Blanco y de todos los equipos del teatro. Anunció el nombramiento de José Miguel Pérez Sierra como nuevo director titular de la Orquesta y Coro del teatro, “por su vinculación con la casa”. Pérez Sierra, madrileño, es un músico reconocido internacionalmente.

As expected, he praised the work of Daniel Blanco and all the theater teams. He announced the appointment of José Miguel Pérez Sierra as the new principal conductor of the theater’s Orchestra and Choir, «because of his ties to the house.» Pérez Sierra, from Madrid, is an internationally recognized musician.

Ojalá tenga suerte con los “rigores de la Administración”, algo que se mencionó en el evento. Aunque también tiene experiencia la señora Benavente en lidias administrativas.
