Desde pequeños mostraron una pasión innata por la mecánica. Orville destacó como ciclista y, junto a su hermano, abrió en 1892 un negocio de reparación de bicicletas en Dayton. En poco tiempo se convirtieron en fabricantes, demostrando una habilidad emprendedora que más tarde los llevaría a cambiar la historia de la humanidad.

From a young age, they displayed an innate passion for mechanics. Orville excelled as a cyclist and, together with his brother, opened a bicycle repair business in Dayton in 1892. They soon became manufacturers, demonstrating an entrepreneurial skill that would later change human history.

Los Primeros Experimentos / The First Experiments

En 1896, los Wright comenzaron a investigar sobre aviación. Crearon un planeador no tripulado capaz de girar en pleno vuelo gracias a un ingenioso dispositivo. Sus pruebas en Kitty Hawk, Carolina del Norte, les permitieron perfeccionar alas, hélices y sistemas de control. Para finales de 1903, ya tenían listo su mayor desafío: un avión tripulado con motor.

In 1896, the Wright brothers began researching aviation. They created an unmanned glider capable of turning in mid-flight thanks to an ingenious device. Their tests in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, allowed them to perfect wings, propellers, and control systems. By the end of 1903, they had their greatest challenge ready: a manned, powered airplane.

El viento soplaba fuerte sobre las dunas de Kitty Hawk. A las nueve de la mañana, con la ayuda de cinco lugareños, los hermanos Wright arrastraron su aeronave de 275 kilos hasta la arena. El motor diseñado por ellos rugió y la máquina quedó lista en la rampa de lanzamiento.

The wind blew hard over the Kitty Hawk dunes. At nine in the morning, with the help of five locals, the Wright brothers dragged their 275-kilogram aircraft onto the sand. The engine they designed roared to life, and the machine was ready on the launch pad.

Orville ganó el derecho de pilotar al lanzar una moneda. Se acomodó recostado en la nave mientras Wilbur sostenía un ala para mantener el equilibrio. Con un golpe de decisión soltó las amarras y, poco a poco, la máquina comenzó a moverse. El viento, su aliado, levantó al Flyer del suelo.

Orville won the right to pilot by flipping a coin. He settled back in the craft while Wilbur held onto a wing for balance. With a decisive stroke, he cast off the ropes, and little by little, the machine began to move. The wind, his ally, lifted the Flyer off the ground.

El Vuelo en Primera Persona / First Person Flight

El viento azotaba el rostro de Orville, la arena se colaba en sus ojos y la máquina se balanceaba entre la tierra y el cielo. Controlaba con nervios de acero la palanca del estabilizador, corrigiendo las alas que se inclinaban peligrosamente. Tras varias oscilaciones bruscas, la aeronave terminó estrellándose contra la arena.

The wind whipped Orville’s face, sand blew into his eyes, and the plane swayed between earth and sky. He controlled the stabilizer lever with nerves of steel, correcting the dangerously tilted wings. After several sharp oscillations, the aircraft finally crashed into the sand.

Entre los testigos de aquel histórico despegue se encontraba William Edward Boeing, quien más tarde fundaría una de las compañías aeronáuticas más influyentes del siglo XX.

Among the witnesses to that historic takeoff was William Edward Boeing, who would later found one of the most influential aeronautical companies of the 20th century.

Los hermanos Wright siguieron perfeccionando sus inventos. En 1909 fundaron la Compañía Wright para fabricar aeronaves y entrenar pilotos.
