ECUADOR ELECTIONS: A few hours away from choosing your destiny

Ecuador, mi amada patria, nos cubres con tu cielo azul, nos sustentas, nos provees y nos deleitas con tus paisajes. Tu futuro y el de tus hijos está en juego entre la represión y la libertad.

Ecuador, my beloved homeland, you cover us with your blue sky, you sustain us, you provide for us, and you delight us with your landscapes. Your future and that of your children is at stake between repression and freedom.

Los ecuatorianos nos encontramos en un momento crucial de nuestra historia. Enfrentando una dura crisis económica, política, social y de seguridad, elegiremos presidente sumidos en una agresiva campaña electoral que nos arrastra entre la violencia, la incoherencia, el hastío y la esperanza.

We Ecuadorians find ourselves at a crucial moment in our history. Facing a severe economic, political, social, and security crisis, we will elect a president immersed in an aggressive electoral campaign that drags us between violence, incoherence, weariness, and hope.

Es esencial que elijamos con consciencia y responsabilidad entre dos opciones con diferencias muy marcadas. Revisemos cada una de ellas:

It’s essential that we make a conscious and responsible choice between two very different options. Let’s review each of them:

Por un lado, una candidata postulada por el partido que gobernó por una década, dejando tras de sí una herencia de endeudamiento, corrupción y sobreprecio en obras públicas. Este partido desvió fondos de la seguridad social para el gasto corriente, dejando en crisis al sistema de pensiones, creó leyes que permiten la impunidad y abrió las puertas del país a delincuentes.

On the one hand, a candidate nominated by the party that governed for a decade, leaving behind a legacy of debt, corruption, and overpricing of public works. This party diverted social security funds for current spending, leaving the pension system in crisis, created laws that allow impunity, and opened the country’s doors to criminals.

La candidata ocupó cargos públicos en ese gobierno, con una glosa de miles de dólares, no se conoce en que ha trabajado fuera de la política. Ahora pregona ser representante de su partido político y basa su campaña en insultos, gritos, ofensas y promesas populistas.

The candidate held public office in that government, with a salary of thousands of dollars; it is unknown what she has done outside of politics. Now she claims to be a representative of her political party and bases her campaign on insults, shouting, insults, and populist promises.

Con un discurso incoherente, sin responder a las preguntas que se le formulan, siempre con la estrategia de atacar a la contraparte en lugar de dar explicaciones. Centra su propuesta en volver a hacer lo que hicieron cuando estuvieron en el poder. Algunas de sus promesas que sin vacilaciones promulga son: tomar los fondos de la reserva internacional, cuando una persona con mínimo conocimiento de economía sabe la debacle que eso significa para un estado; la creación de los “gestores de paz” que en Venezuela se crearon al llamar zonas de paz a las zonas donde no pudieron controlar la delincuencia y no entra la policía; el peligro de desdolarizar al país, que mientras ella lo niega, gente de su partido habla de una dolarización a la ecuatoriana, que les permitirá imprimir moneda sin sustento, con la crisis inflacionaria que eso conlleva. Sin una postura clara para atacar a las mafias, habló en algún momento de pactar con ellas.

With an incoherent discourse, without answering the questions posed to her, always using the strategy of attacking the other party instead of providing explanations, she focuses her proposal on repeating what they did when they were in power. Some of the promises she unhesitatingly promulgates are: seizing international reserve funds, when anyone with minimal knowledge of economics knows the debacle that would mean for a state; the creation of «peace managers,» which in Venezuela were created by calling peace zones the areas where they couldn’t control crime and the police couldn’t enter; the danger of de-dollarizing the country, which, while she denies it, people in her party are talking about Ecuadorian-style dollarization, which would allow them to print currency without support, with the inflationary crisis that entails. Without a clear stance on attacking the mafias, she spoke at one point of making a pact with them.

Adicionalmente, su actitud, muy similar a la de su líder y su discurso confuso, evidencian que quién manejará el país no será ella sino a quién representa.

Additionally, her attitude, very similar to that of her leader, and her confusing discourse show that she will not be the one who will lead the country, but rather the person she represents.

Por otro lado, un candidato joven, actual presidente de transición. Con formación económica y política, millonario, de una de las familias más adineradas del país. Durante los 15 meses de su gobierno, pagó deudas históricas de la década del correísmo, realizó obras en los ejes social, desarrollo económico e infraestructura, energía y medio ambiente. Declaró la guerra a las bandas delincuenciales que han sembrado el terror en algunos sectores de la población, con asesoría internacional para hacer frente al narcotráfico.

On the other hand, a young candidate, the current transitional president, with an economic and political background, is a millionaire, from one of the wealthiest families in the country. During his 15 months in office, he paid off historic debts from the Correísmo decade and carried out projects in the areas of social, economic development and infrastructure, energy, and the environment. He declared war on the criminal gangs that have sown terror in some sectors of the population, with international assistance to combat drug trafficking.

Sus padres, con gran trayectoria política en el país, cuentan con una fundación que desde hace 47 años realiza labor social en las áreas de salud, educación, empleo y deporte.

His parents, with extensive political experience in the country, have a foundation that has been carrying out social work in the areas of health, education, employment, and sports for 47 years.

Empresario que ofrece incentivar la inversión privada para la generación de empleo y el fortalecimiento de las relaciones comerciales. Atención a la salud y la educación. Y terminar con el narcotráfico que tiene sumido al país en el miedo y el estancamiento económico. Un hombre sereno y reservado, con dominio de sus emociones, respetuoso de la libertad como lo ha demostrado en su gobierno.

A businessman who offers to encourage private investment to create jobs and strengthen trade relations. He also offers to provide healthcare and education. He also offers to end the drug trafficking that has plunged the country into fear and economic stagnation. A calm and reserved man, with a command of his emotions, he respects freedom, as he has demonstrated during his administration.

Con estas dos opciones, la campaña ha convertido a las redes sociales y la televisión en medios de difusión de la discordia, la violencia y las mentiras. Las ansias de poder de quien sumió al país en la corrupción no tienen freno, resulta inverosímil pensar en un expresidente prófugo de la justicia que desde el exilio siembra miedo, y amenaza con una venganza contundente, que grita, acusa, se burla y miente, llegando al extremo de publicar noticias montadas en fotos de periódicos cerrados años atrás, un informe falso de la DEA, una misiva falsa de la Casa Blanca. En busca de desprestigiar al presidente para manipular los votos hacia la candidata de su partido. Lo que demuestra un ruin deseo de poder sin límites.

With these two options, the campaign has turned social media and television into media outlets for discord, violence, and lies. The thirst for power of someone who plunged the country into corruption is unstoppable. It’s unbelievable to imagine a former president, a fugitive from justice, sowing fear from exile and threatening relentless revenge, shouting, accusing, mocking, and lying, going so far as to publish news fabricated with photos of newspapers closed years ago, a fake DEA report, and a fake White House letter. He seeks to discredit the president in order to manipulate votes for his party’s candidate. This demonstrates a vile desire for limitless power.

A mi criterio eso representa una gran bandera roja que algunos ecuatorianos no tienen la capacidad de ver.

In my opinion, this represents a big red flag that some Ecuadorians are unable to see.

Ofertas de campaña que espantan porque vemos el resultado en los países de la región, censurar la música, la televisión y las redes sociales. Ya lo vivimos cuando nos vendieron la ilusión de progreso, a costa de un saqueo sin piedad, una mezquina represión y la moral de la nación. Porque el progreso no sirve si se construye sobre el robo y la mentira, “robó, pero hizo obra” es el argumento de quienes no comprenden que la corrupción deteriora los cimientos de un estado.

Campaign promises are frightening because we see the results in countries across the region: censorship of music, television, and social media. We already experienced it when we were sold the illusion of progress, at the cost of merciless plunder, petty repression, and the nation’s morale. Because progress is useless if it’s built on theft and lies. «He stole, but he did good work,» is the argument of those who don’t understand that corruption undermines the foundations of a state.

Lamentablemente, una parte de la sociedad que vivía olvidada, que nunca vio una obra significativa en su pueblo, se dejó obnubilar por la carretera, por el bono, por la escuela moderna a la que los niños debían caminar por horas. Es comprensible, que al tener algo, quizás por primera vez en su vida, sienta gratitud. Lo triste es que esa gente desconoce que el precio de ese beneficio lo pagarán ellos y las próximas generaciones porque ingenuamente creen que los políticos piensan en ellos, cuando la triste realidad es que solo piensan en su beneficio.

Unfortunately, a segment of society that lived in oblivion, that never saw a significant project in their town, was dazzled by the highway, the voucher, the modern school that children had to walk for hours to get to. It’s understandable that, upon having something, perhaps for the first time in their lives, they feel grateful. The sad thing is that these people don’t know that the price of this benefit will be paid by themselves and future generations because they naively believe that politicians are thinking about them, when the sad reality is that they only think about their own benefit.

También hay quienes recordamos la apertura de fronteras para que ingresen los extranjeros sin el requisito del pasado judicial, las leyes con que se reprimió a la prensa, la constitución que amparó a los delincuentes en todas las esferas de la sociedad, la prepotencia y los insultos de las sabatinas, los millones de dólares gastados en los elefantes blancos, el saqueo a las reservas internacionales, la desaparición, persecución y muerte de personas que denunciaron la corrupción o pensaban diferente, las millonarias indemnizaciones que tuvimos que pagar por las decisiones de quien gobernaba.

There are also those of us who remember the opening of borders to allow foreigners to enter without the requirement of a criminal record, the laws that repressed the press, the constitution that protected criminals in all spheres of society, the arrogance and insults of the Saturday press conferences, the millions of dollars spent on white elephants, the plundering of international reserves, the disappearance, persecution, and death of people who denounced corruption or thought differently, the multimillion-dollar compensation we had to pay for the decisions of those in power.

Es fundamental entender que los verdaderos mandantes de un país son sus ciudadanos. Los gobernantes no son más que servidores públicos a quienes se les encomienda una tarea, y su deber es cumplirla. Por ello, no deben ser idealizados ni venerados, pues realizar obras no es un acto de generosidad, sino una obligación por la que reciben un salario. A menudo escucho a personas decir mal agradecidos, «¿a quién le debemos las carreteras?» La respuesta es simple: no se las debemos a nadie en particular. Fueron construidas con el dinero del país, con sobreprecio y endeudando a las futuras generaciones. Las obras no son un favor, sino parte de la responsabilidad de quien gobierna.

It is essential to understand that the true leaders of a country are its citizens. Those who govern are nothing more than public servants entrusted with a task, and their duty is to fulfill it. Therefore, they should not be idealized or venerated, as carrying out public works is not an act of generosity, but an obligation for which they receive a salary. I often hear ungrateful people say, «To whom do we owe the roads?» The answer is simple: we don’t owe them to anyone in particular. They were built with the country’s money, at overpriced rates, and putting future generations in debt. Public works are not a favor, but part of the responsibility of those who govern.

Esta falta de conciencia ha llevado a muchos a endiosar a ciertos líderes, olvidando que la verdadera lealtad debe ser hacia la justicia, la transparencia y el bienestar del pueblo, no hacia una persona que simplemente cumplió.

This lack of awareness has led many to deify certain leaders, forgetting that true loyalty must be to justice, transparency, and the well-being of the people, not to a person who simply did his or her part.

Considero que tenemos una gran oportunidad de mirar a la consciencia y preguntarnos ¿estoy mirando la verdad o lo que quieren mostrarme?, ¿estoy aceptando la discordia que quieren sembrar en mi alma?, ¿estoy mirando con objetividad las dos opciones o me estoy dejando llevar por las palabras con que me han envuelto?

I believe we have a great opportunity to look at our conscience and ask ourselves: Am I seeing the truth or what they want to show me? Am I accepting the discord they want to sow in my soul? Am I looking at both options objectively, or am I letting myself be carried away by the words they’ve wrapped me in?

Es momento de mirar con claridad y coherencia. Quien tiene un corazón sano y cree en Dios no miente, no manipula, no envenena ni vive obsesionado con retomar el poder a toda costa. ¿Cómo confiar en aquellos que, en lugar de ofrecer soluciones reales, solo siembran discordia y engañan a los ingenuos?

It’s time to look with clarity and coherence. Those who have a healthy heart and believe in God don’t lie, manipulate, poison, or live obsessed with regaining power at all costs. How can we trust those who, instead of offering real solutions, only sow discord and deceive the naive?

Es urgente despertar, abrir los ojos y no dejarnos engañar. Debemos recordar que somos responsables de nuestro propio destino, sin caer en la victimización ni culpar a otros por nuestras circunstancias. Es el momento de pedir luz para decidir con consciencia y verdadera libertad.

It is urgent to wake up, open our eyes, and not allow ourselves to be fooled. We must remember that we are responsible for our own destiny, without falling into victimhood or blaming others for our circumstances. It is time to ask for light to make conscious decisions with true freedom.

Somos un pueblo de fe, un pueblo que confía en Dios y sabe que el verdadero cambio se forma en la honestidad, el compromiso y el esfuerzo. Pidamos al Señor que ilumine nuestro espíritu, que nos conceda sabiduría para elegir con rectitud. Pongamos el Ecuador en sus manos, para que reine la luz en nuestra patria y nos guíe hacia la prosperidad.

We are a people of faith, a people who trust in God and know that true change is forged through honesty, commitment, and effort. Let us ask the Lord to enlighten our spirit, to grant us wisdom to make right choices. Let us place Ecuador in His hands, so that light may reign in our homeland and guide us toward prosperity.

Ecuatoriano, escucha a tu corazón, que la luz decida tu destino con libertad. ¡Saldremos adelante! y que Dios nos bendiga.

Ecuadorian, listen to your heart. Let the light freely decide your destiny. We will succeed! And may God bless us.
