REDFORD, KEATON, PONCELA: Emptiness filled with constant memories

En menos de un mes han dejado este ciclo de vida tres gigantes de la historia del cine, Robert Redford, (16 de septiembre) y Diane Keaton. (11 de octubre) Entre los españoles, Eusebio Poncela.(27 de agosto)

In less than a month, three giants of film history have left this cycle: Robert Redford (September 16) and Diane Keaton (October 11). Among the Spanish actors, Eusebio Poncela (August 27).

Llega un momento en el que casi cada día van produciéndose vacíos a nuestro alrededor. El vacío que dejan personas, cercanas o icónicas, que acompañaron nuestras vidas. Un buen dia nos damos cuenta de que estamos rodeadas de muertos. Y uno empieza a volver la mirada hacia ese momento presente que es el único que tenemos. Y a darnos cuenta de que no estaremos en el recuerdo de muchos, como los que por su arte estuvieron presentes en nuestras vidas; fueron parte de ellas.

There comes a time when, almost every day, voids appear around us. The void left by people, close or iconic, who accompanied our lives. One day, we realize we’re surrounded by the dead. And we begin to look back at that present moment, which is the only one we have. And we realize that we won’t be remembered by many, like those who, through their art, were present in our lives; they were part of them.

Ese es el objetivo de Culturas del Mundo esta semana: Rejuvenecer recordando películas que hicieron historia en el cine. ¡El cine! ¿Ha habido algo más presente en nuestras vidas que el cine?

That’s the goal of World Cultures this week: to rejuvenate by remembering films that made cinematic history. Cinema! Has there ever been anything more present in our lives than cinema?

Robert Redford: Actor, director, promotor del festival Sundance, activista de causas justas. Uno de los hombres más carismáticos y con mayor sex appeal  de la historia del séptimo arte. Afirmo. No basta con ser guapo; hay guapos que no dicen nada, no despiertan nada, ni se los ve como hombres (hablo como mujer) no transmiten virilidad.

Robert Redford: Actor, director, Sundance Film Festival promoter, activist for just causes. One of the most charismatic and sex-appealing men in the history of cinema. I affirm. It’s not enough to be handsome; there are handsome men who say nothing, arouse nothing, and are not seen as men (I speak as a woman)—they don’t convey virility.

Nuestro Robert ha sido un paradigma de belleza masculina, virilidad, atracción sexual, carisma, empatía y simpatía; todo eso sumado a sus dotes artísticas le hicieron único. Repaso su filmografía  y compruebo que su potente presencia en mi vida ha sido muy superior a la de algunos cercanos, que a la postre dejaron poca huella. La huella de Robert Redford  es profunda en mi identificación con muchos de los caracteres que él asumió en el cine. ¡Qué enorme suerte, poder ser tantas personas en lugar de una sola en la que se camuflan muchas otras! Si hay algo que verdaderamente envidio y siento en mí como un drama, es  no haber podido sacar a plena luz muchas de mis personalidades ocultas, que sí he podido vivir vicariamente a través de personajes cinematográficos, masculinos y femeninos.

Our Robert has been a paradigm of masculine beauty, virility, sexual attraction, charisma, empathy, and sympathy; all of this, combined with his artistic gifts, made him unique. I review his filmography and realize that his powerful presence in my life has been far greater than that of some close associates, who ultimately leave little mark. Robert Redford’s influence runs deep in my identification with many of the characters he took on in film. What enormous luck, to be able to be so many people instead of just one, in which many others camouflage themselves! If there is something I truly envy and feel like a drama in myself, it is not having been able to fully bring out many of my hidden personalities, which I have been able to live vicariously through cinematic characters, male and female.

Y puedo volver a sentir el impacto que sus interpretaciones dejaron en mí en “La jauría humana”,  “Descalzos por el parque”, “Butch Cassidy y el chico Sundance”, “Las aventuras de Jeremías Johnson”, “Tal como éramos”, “El golpe”, “El gran Gatsby”, “Todos los hombres del presidente”,  “Brubaker”, “Memorias de África”, “Habana”, “El río de la vida”, (también como director) “Gente corriente”, (director) “Una propuesta indecente”,  “El hombre que susurraba a los caballos”,  “La verdad”, “Nosotros en la noche”… ¿quién no ha sido alguna vez un perdedor sin causa, un enamorado, un delincuente sin proponérselo, un aventurero, un tipo que por falta de criterio pierde lo más importante, un ladrón decente,  un tipo que paga su amor frustrado con su vida, un investigador de políticos corruptos, un director de prisión honesto a quién nadie quiere precisamente por serlo,  un enamorado sin futuro, un miembro de una familia desdichada, un seductor guapo y con dinero,  un psicoterapeuta de animales humanos y no humanos, el drama de la verdad oculta, u otra historia de amor sin final feliz…

I review Robert Redford’s filmography. And I can feel again the impact his performances left on me in “The Pack,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “Jeremiah Johnson,” “The Way We Were,” “The Sting,” “The Great Gatsby,” “All the President’s Men,” “Brubaker,” “Out of Africa,” “Havana,” “A River Runs Through It,” (also as director) “Ordinary People,” (director) “Indecent Proposal,” “The Horse Whisperer,” “The truth” “Our Day at Night”… who hasn’t been a loser without a cause, a lover, an unintentional criminal, an adventurer, a guy who, due to poor judgment, loses what matters most, a decent criminal, a guy who pays for his frustrated love with his life, an investigator of corrupt politicians, a decent prison warden whom nobody likes precisely because he is one, a lover without a future, a member of an unhappy family, a handsome and wealthy seducer, a psychotherapist of human and non-human animals, the drama of hidden truth, or another love story without a happy ending…

Esto es la vida misma, en general el fracaso de las relaciones humanas con excepciones. ¿Quién no se ve reflejado en alguna de ellas, en muchas de ellas? Esto es una llamada a la difícil sinceridad con uno mismo.

This is life itself, generally the failure of human relationships, with exceptions. Who doesn’t see themselves reflected in some of them, in many of them? This is a call to the difficult honesty with oneself.

Diane Keaton. Justo ahora que TVE2 está reponiendo semanalmente los lunes “El Padrino”, en la que Keaton impersona a Kay Adams Corleone en las tres entregas, mostrando los múltiples cambios que se producen en una persona a lo largo de su vida, aunque esa vida no tenga nada de convencional, ¿alguna lo tiene? Ingenua, auto engañada por amor, esperanzada, hasta cuando dice ¡basta! y se va, valiente y segura cuando hace enfrentarse a su marido con el horror en que ha convertido su vida, cuando se ríe de la hipocresía de la Iglesia, el retorno ante la enfermedad, el recuerdo que no se borra del primer amor,  la desolación final con su hija víctima de la Mafia… ¡qué terrible historia! Ingenua, cobarde, esperanzada, valiente, siempre enamorada, rota ante la muerte…

Diane Keaton. Just now that TVE2 is re-airing “The Godfather” weekly on Mondays, in which Keaton impersonates Kay Adams Corleone in all three episodes, showing the many changes that occur in a person throughout their life, even if that life is anything but conventional. Are any of us? Naive, self-deceived by love, hopeful, even when she says “enough!” and leaves, brave and confident when she makes her husband confront the horror he has turned his life into, when she laughs at the hypocrisy of the Church, her return in the face of illness, the ineradicable memory of her first love, the final desolation with her daughter, a victim of the Mafia… what a terrible story! Naive, cowardly, hopeful, brave, always in love, broken in the face of death…

Actriz, directora, amante sin matrimonios, prueba de amor desinteresado y verdadero, dar sin esperar recibir, vitalista, carismática, un derroche de don de gentes conocido como empatía.

Actress, director, lover without marriage, proof of selfless and true love, giving without expecting to receive, vitalist, charismatic, empathetic, a waste of people skills known as empathy.

Vamos a contemplarnos a través de alguna de sus películas, (las que he visto o recuerdo, que no son todas). “El Padrino I”, “Sueños de seductor”,  “El Padrino II”, “Amor y muerte”, su oscarizada auto biografía “Annie Hall”, “Buscando a Mr. Goodbar”, “Interiores”, “Manhattan”, “Rojos”, “Días de radio”, “El Padrino III”, “Misterioso asesinato en Manhattan”, “El padre de la novia”, “El club de las primeras esposas”,  “Cuando menos te lo esperas”, “La gran boda”, y algún etc.

Let’s contemplate ourselves through some of his films (the ones I’ve seen or remember, which are not all of them). “The Godfather Part II”, “The Godfather Part II”, “Something’s gotta give”, his Oscar-winning autobiography “Annie Hall”, “Searching for Mr. Goodbar”, “Interiors”, “Manhattan”, “Reds”, “Radio Days”, “The Godfather Part III”, “Manhattan Murder Mystery”, “Father of the Bride”, “The First Wives Club”, “Sometimes You Least Expect It”, “The Big Wedding”, and so on.

De cuánto drama, cuánto amor, cuánto humor, patriotismo, suspense y al final desengaño dejó reflejo en nuestras vidas. Gracias, Diane por todo lo que hiciste para conocerme a mí misma sin engaños. Aunque duela.  No se llega al conocimiento sin dolor. Pero es el único modo de liberarse.

How much drama, how much love, how much humor, patriotism, suspense, and ultimately, heartbreak were reflected in our lives. Thank you, Diane, for everything you did to help me get to know myself without deception. Even if it hurts. You don’t get to know yourself without pain. But it’s the only way to break free.

Eusebio Poncela. Lo de siempre. Si hubiera sido norteamericano habría sido tan mundialmente conocido como los colegas aquí referenciados. Amé su arte, como muchos de mis lectores. Se ha ido recientemente y quiero traer aquí sus personajes más complejos, humorísticos, dramáticos. El primero que me viene a la mente es su personaje de Carlos Deza   en “Los gozos y las sombras”, magistral serie de tv, obra maestra de Gonzalo Torrente Ballester. O su inefable comisario en la almodovariana “Matador”; siguiendo con Almodóvar, “La ley del deseo” como el director de cine homosexual Pablo Quintero, o como salir del armario colectivamente en una España que aún se sacudía los tabúes hipócritas de una dictadura y de una Iglesia alejada de Cristo; o en la histórica “El Dorado” de Carlos Saura como el militar Fernando de Guzmán; “Martín H” el Dante del excelente psicoanálisis típico de una producción hispano- argentina; “Operación ogro” en la piel de un terrorista, Txabi, o la historia del asesinato espectacular del último jefe de estado de la dictadura; o en la intrigante y excelente “El invierno en Lisboa”…

Eusebio Poncela. The same as always. Had he been an American, he would have been as world-renowned as the colleagues referenced here. But I loved his art, like many of my readers. He passed away recently, and I want to bring up his most complex, humorous, and dramatic characters here. The first that comes to mind is his character Carlos Deza in “Los gozos y las sombras,” a masterful TV series, a masterpiece by Gonzalo Torrente Ballester. Or his ineffable commissioner in Almodóvar’s “Matador”; continuing with Almodóvar, “La ley del deseo” as the homosexual film director Pablo Quintero; or how to collectively come out of the closet in a Spain still shaking off the hypocritical taboos of a dictatorship and a Church far removed from Christ; or in Carlos Saura’s historic “El Dorado” as the military man Fernando de Guzmán; “Martín H,” the Dante of excellent psychoanalysis typical of a Spanish-Argentine production; «Operation Ogre» in the role of a terrorist, Txabi, or the story of the spectacular assassination of the dictatorship’s last head of state; or in the intriguing and excellent «Winter in Lisbon»…

Actor de cine, teatro, (donde empezó) TV, productor, guionista, pintor, polifacético, con enorme carisma, incluso en papeles secundarios se hacía protagonista. Ganó premios, por películas y series de TV y también  el especial a su trayectoria profesional.

A film, theater, (where he started) TV actor, producer, screenwriter, painter, versatile, with enormous charisma, he even took center stage in supporting roles. He won awards for films and TV series, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Special.

Dejaste huella profunda en muchas vidas. Grande tu huella y tu recuerdo, Eusebio Poncela.
