Se fue de este ciclo de vida apenas despuntada la mañana del lunes de Pascua de Resurrección, tras haberse despedido de creyentes y no creyentes el domingo de Pascua con su bendición urbi et orbe y haber paseado por la Plaza de San Pedro entre todos los que allí estaban. Después asistió a la Misa de Pascua.

Vienen a la memoria frases como “amaos los unos a los otros como yo os he amado”. Parábolas como la del hijo pródigo, como la de la mujer adúltera, “aquel que esté libre de pecado que tire la primera piedra”, la multiplicación de un pan y tres peces para alimentar a la multitud reunida para escuchar su palabra; las resurrecciones de Lázaro y del hijo de Jairo; su amor y respeto por las mujeres, su cercanía con los extraños; la curación del paralítico en la piscina Bethesda de Jerusalén. Los Evangelios o palabra de Jesús están llenos de ejemplos a imitar en la vida de todos los que quieran acercarse a ser justos.

Phrases like «love one another as I have loved you» come to mind. Parables like that of the prodigal son, that of the adulterous woman, «let he who is without sin cast the first stone,» the multiplication of one loaf and three fish to feed the crowd gathered to hear his word; the resurrections of Lazarus and Jairus’s son; his love and respect for women, his closeness to strangers; the healing of the paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. The Gospels, or the word of Jesus, are full of examples to imitate in the lives of all who wish to approach justice.

Como se acercó Francisco, defensor de los que sufren persecución, por ejemplo al pueblo palestino, al pueblo de Ucrania, al pobre pueblo sirio; defensor de las medidas para paliar el cambio climático, nada menos que mediante su primera encíclica Laudato si de 2015; defensor de la justicia social  para todos los que padecen graves injusticias sociales en tiempos que deberían ser de bienestar. Defensor de los homosexuales. Defensor del acceso de las mujeres a cargos eclesiásticos.

Fue un arzobispo incómodo para el kirschnerismo en Buenos Aires; fue falsamente acusado de connivencia con la dictadura militar, incluso de entregar a un compañero jesuita. Por el contrario, ayudó a huir a varios perseguidos. Pasó de ser “Hombre del año” y portada en la revista Time a cuestionarse la misma revista si era católico: ¿Is he a Catholic?

He was an uncomfortable archbishop for Kirchnerism in Buenos Aires; he was falsely accused of collusion with the military dictatorship, even of handing over a fellow Jesuit. On the contrary, he helped several persecuted people escape. Dentro y fuera de la Iglesia han sido cuestionadas sus reformas, como excesivas o como demasiado conservadoras. Como si reformar el núcleo duro de la Iglesia Católica pudiera hacerse a base de decretazos. Nunca llueve a gusto de todos, pero sus reformas dentro de la Curia, su apertura a la crítica de los abusos sexuales dentro de la Iglesia, la renovación del sistema financiero dentro de la Iglesia,  la apertura a la inclusión con otras grandes religiones, su defensa del empoderamiento de la mujer dentro de la Iglesia, su defensa de los homosexuales, su crítica al sistema económico actual entre otros cambios, ¿pueden considerarse como algo menor dentro de una Iglesia extremadamente conservadora en estos y otros aspectos?

Cierto, le quedó acabar con el celibato forzoso que nunca estuvo en las enseñanzas de Jesús, sino que fue instaurado como obligatorio en los Concilios de Letrán de los años 1123 y 1139. Hasta entonces la Iglesia solo recomendaba la abstinencia sexual. Un celibato que ha causado y causa mucho daño en el seno de la Iglesia, entre otros la pederastia en un alto porcentaje.

No hay ninguna contradicción para que un sacerdote se pueda casar. Acá en la Curia tenemos uno -hoy mismo me lo crucé- que tiene su señora y su hijo».

In 2023, in an interview with Infobae for an Argentine website, Francis expressed his willingness to review celibacy within the Catholic Church, «since it is a ‘temporary prescription’ of the Western Church. There is no contradiction for a priest to marry. Here in the Curia, we have one—I met him today—who has his wife and son.»

Él estaba de acuerdo. Pero le ha faltado vida para llevar a cabo un cambio tan dramático que hubiera suscitado mucha controversia dentro y fuera del Vaticano. Hay cambios que requieren su momento. Momento que ojalá llegue con su sucesor.

He agreed. But he hasn’t had the time to carry out such a dramatic change that would have sparked much controversy inside and outside the Vatican. Some changes require their time. Hopefully, a time that will arrive with his successor.

Más polémicas. Oigo decir tanto a algunos argentinos como a españoles que el Papa nunca visitó estos dos países. Volvamos a Jesús: “No es necesario ir donde la semilla está echada. Hay que ir donde hay que plantar la semilla”. Si el propio Jesús no fue comprendido ni por sus propios apóstoles ni por muchos cristianos a día de hoy, no hay que sorprenderse de una falta puntual de comprensión hacia Francisco, que además de representar como vicario a Jesús, solo era un hombre que como tal habrá tenido miedos y dudas. Una cosa es pensar y otra transformar el pensamiento en acción. Pero sin duda merece ser compasivos con el hombre que fue.

More controversy. I hear both some Argentinians and Spaniards say that the Pope never visited these two countries. Let’s return to Jesus: «It’s not necessary to go where the seed is sown. Francisco ha sido un auténtico vendaval social,  ha realizado una crítica sin precedentes al sistema capitalista, sus reformas internas en una Curia fosilizada le causaron mucho sufrimiento. Si toda reforma positiva es un acto de valentía, si esto sucede desde el núcleo interior de la Iglesia es plantar una semilla donde no la había. A pura imitación de Jesús.
