Nasrid aromas of Granada

Tengo muchas conexiones familiares y culturales con Granada, la ciudad más hermosa y con más poesía del mundo musulmán. Conexiones a través de mi familia paterna, conexiones lorquianas de las que tanto he escrito. Y mis posibles conexiones nazaríes.

I have many family and cultural connections with Granada, the most beautiful and poetic city in the Muslim world. Connections through my paternal family, Lorca connections that I have written so much about. And my possible Nasrid connections.

En una reciente estancia en Granada, he hecho un recorrido histórico por algunos lugares donde estuvo o vivió Federico García Lorca. Cronológicamente, el trayecto empieza por el hoy número 50 de la Acera de Darro, primer domicilio familiar en la capital. El edificio actual no es el mismo y poco importa para la memoria.

During a recent stay in Granada, I took a historical tour of some places where Federico García Lorca was or lived. Chronologically, the journey begins at number 50 Acera de Darro, the first family home in the capital. The current building is not the same and it matters little for the memory.

Sin duda lo más emocionante fue mi cena en el hoy restaurante Chikito de la Plaza del Campillo, antiguo Café Alameda, donde durante años se reunió la tertulia literaria El Rinconcillo y donde hoy en día la escultura de Federico sentado a la mesa preside el histórico rincón. Muy cerca del antiguo café se encuentra la estatua de Mariana Pineda, mártir de una revolución que no fue y heroína lorquiana.

Without a doubt, the most exciting thing was my dinner at what is now the Chikito restaurant in Plaza del Campillo, the former Café Alameda, where for years the literary gathering El Rinconcillo met and where today the sculpture of Federico sitting at the table presides over the historic corner . Very close to the old cafe is the statue of Mariana Pineda, martyr of a revolution that did not happen and Lorca heroine.

Es obligatorio pasar por la casa de la familia Rosales en la calle Angulo esquina a Tablas, hoy Hotel Reina Cristina, donde Federico vivió refugiado sus últimos días de libertad y donde fue apresado para ser llevado al gobierno civil, entonces en un edificio que hoy es Facultad de Derecho. Quizá donde Federico vivió sus últimos momentos de esperanza, porque sabía que los Rosales estaban procurando su libertad. Lugares para la memoria emocionada.

It is mandatory to pass by the Rosales family house on Angulo Street on the corner of Tablas, today the Reina Cristina Hotel, where Federico lived as a refugee during his last days of freedom and where he was arrested to be taken to the civil government, then in a building that today is Law school. Perhaps where Federico lived his last moments of hope, because he knew that the Rosales were seeking his freedom. Places for emotional memory.

Considero parte importante de la memoria lorquiana la Granada nazarí, antes zirí, almorávide y almohade. La Granada de la Alhambra, el Generalife, el Albaicín, el Corral del Carbón, la Alcaicería, el Zacatín. He estado alojada en un hotel en la Plaza Bib Rambla, (la puerta de la orilla del río) un edificio histórico, exquisitamente modernizado en su interior. El placer de lo nuevo en pleno centro histórico. 

I consider the Nasrid Granada, formerly Zirid, Almoravid and Almohad, an important part of Lorca’s memory. The Granada of the Alhambra, the Generalife, the Albaicín, the Corral del Carbón, the Alcaicería, the Zacatín. I have been staying in a hotel on Plaza Bib Rambla, (the riverside gate) a historic building, exquisitely modernized inside. The pleasure of the new in the historic center.

Estoy a un paso de la desaparecida Puerta Real (Bab Haqiqiun) que daba acceso a la Medina y Palacios de la Alhambra. Al otro lado de la plaza, la Alcaicería, la zona comercial elegante y el Zacatín o mercado de segunda mano, hoy como ayer, porque han conservado su aroma desde 1492. La Alcaicería conecta con la Granada de Fernando e Isabel, la Catedral y la Capilla Real y estas con la Gran Vía de Colón, en cuya orilla derecha ya nos encontramos en la parte baja del Albaicín y su paralela Calle Elvira. El Albaicín no es solo el barrio más precioso y antiguo de Granada, es un crisol de culturas. Hoy conserva intactos sus aromas nazaríes.

I am a step away from the missing Royal Gate (Bab Haqiqiun) that gave access to the Medina and Palaces of the Alhambra. On the other side of the square, the Alcaicería, the elegant shopping area and the Zacatín or second-hand market, today as yesterday, because they have preserved their aroma since 1492. The Alcaicería connects with the Granada of Fernando and Isabel, the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel and you are with the Gran Vía de Colón, on whose right bank we are already in the lower part of the Albaicín and its parallel Calle Elvira. The Albaicín is not only the most beautiful and oldest neighborhood in Granada, it is a melting pot of cultures. Today it preserves its Nasrid aromas intact.

Frente a la Gran Vía de Colón, el majestuoso grupo escultórico de bronce, que representa al navegante y cosmógrafo Cristóbal Colón presentando a la reina Isabel, sentada en su trono en majestad, las llamadas “proposiciones”, en términos actuales proyecto de la travesía atlántica por primera vez en la historia, con un enorme error: Al otro lado de la Mar Océana no estaba el Extremo Oriente asiático… Granada es por tanto, la cuna del Descubrimiento, aunque esas “proposiciones” fueran presentadas en Santa Fe, en la vega, a diez kilómetros de la aún capital nazarí, porque Santa Fe fue fundada como campamento militar para la conquista de Granada y es la única ciudad de España que nunca fue tocada por el Islam.

In front of the Gran Vía de Colón, the majestic bronze sculptural group, which represents the navigator and cosmographer Christopher Columbus presenting to Queen Isabel, seated on her throne in majesty, the so-called “proposals”, in current terms the project of the Atlantic crossing for the first time in history, with a huge error: On the other side of the Ocean Sea was not the Far East of Asia… Granada is therefore the cradle of the Discovery, although those “proposals” were presented in Santa Fe, in the plain, ten kilometers from the still Nasrid capital, because Santa Fe was founded as a military camp for the conquest of Granada and is the only city in Spain that was never touched by Islam.

Incluso esta presencia de primer momento de Fernando e Isabel en Granada, tiene aromas nazaríes, por la triste historia del último sultán, Boabdil el Chico, más poeta que político, dominado por una madre fanática y un tío ambicioso, El Zagal, que aspiraba a destronarle. Entre todos debilitaron a un ya debilitado último reino musulmán peninsular, entre todos se lo pusieron muy fácil a los reyes de Castilla y Aragón.

Even this initial presence of Fernando and Isabel in Granada has Nasrid aromas, due to the sad story of the last sultan, Boabdil the Chico, more poet than politician, dominated by a fanatic mother and an ambitious uncle, El Zagal, who aspired to dethrone him Together they weakened an already weakened last peninsular Muslim kingdom, together they made it very easy for the kings of Castile and Aragon.

He querido rememorar a esta Granada perdida en la Historia y muy presente en sus monumentos y calles únicos. Me di el placer al día siguiente de mi llegada de pasar dos horas en el hammán Baños Elvira, una experiencia para el placer y la salud que todo el mundo debería al menos probar o mejor repetir una vez al mes. I wanted to remember this Granada lost in History and very present in its unique monuments and streets. I gave myself the pleasure the day after my arrival of spending two hours in the Baños Elvira hammam, an experience for pleasure and health that everyone should at least try or better repeat once a month. A part of the culture of water, which these first invaders, then the gift of a culture unparalleled in Europe at that time, who installed an irrigation system that turned dry lands into orchards.

Las  casas y palacios con su patio o  patios interiores, con fuentes cantarinas y plantas en las paredes, lo que hoy llaman jardines verticales como si fuera algo nuevo. Y la cal blanca al exterior, para frenar la penetración de los rayos solares. Un sistema para mantener frescos los interiores hasta hoy. La Alhambra es eso, un complejo de patios en el centro de construcciones decoradas con filigranas vegetales y geométricas. Solo que la Alhambra no es blanca, es roja, como su nombre indica.

The houses and palaces with their patio or interior patios, with singing fountains and plants on the walls, what today they call vertical gardens as if it were something new. The Alhambra is that, a complex of patios in the center of buildings decorated with vegetal and geometric filigrees. Only the Alhambra is not white, it is red, as its name suggests

Dos tablaos flamencos en el Albaicín, uno con nombre de boda gitana, La Alboreá, en la parte baja, frente a la Plaza del Triunfo y la histórica Cuesta de Gomérez, una de las subidas a la Alhambra. Otro en el alto Albaicín, los Jardines de Zoraya, un pequeño lugar donde actuaban dos estrellas del cante y baile flamencos, dos hermanas, que vienen de una muy artística saga familiar malagueña. Al cante La Repompilla, nada menos que ganadora de la Lámpara Minera 2021 en el histórico concurso del Cante de las Minas. Y su hermana la Repompa, bailaora racial donde las haya. Y todo un elenco de guitarras y más cante y baile. Eso en un local que tendrá como máximo un aforo de cincuenta personas.

Two flamenco tablaos in the Albaicín, one with the name of a gypsy wedding, La Alboreá, in the lower part, in front of the Plaza del Triunfo and the historic Cuesta de Gomérez, one of the climbs to the Alhambra. Another in the upper Albaicín, the Zoraya Gardens, a small place where two stars of flamenco singing and dancing performed, two sisters, who come from a very artistic Malaga family saga. To the singing La Repompilla, no less than winner of the 2021 Mining Lamp in the historic Cante de las Minas contest. And her sister Repompa, a racial dancer if there ever was one. And a whole cast of guitars and more singing and dancing. This is in a place that will have a maximum capacity of fifty people.

La joya de la corona de mis noches nazaríes, fue en los Jardines del Generalife, donde hubo una residencia veraniega de los sultanes granadinos, fuentes y jardines que creaban un auténtico micro clima fresco, en pleno verano. De camino al espacio abierto convertido en Teatro del Generalife, las maravillosas vistas de la cercana Alhambra y del más apartado alto Albaicín al atardecer.

The jewel in the crown of my Nasrid nights was in the Generalife Gardens, where there was a summer residence of the Granada sultans, fountains and gardens that created an authentic cool micro climate, in the middle of summer. On the way to the open space converted into the Generalife Theater, the wonderful views of the nearby Alhambra and the more secluded upper Albaicín at sunset.

Como olvidar el Patio de los Aljibes, sede en 1922 de aquel Primer Concurso Nacional de Cante Jondo o Cante Primitivo Andaluz, tan lleno de memoria de Lorca.

How can we forget the Patio de los Aljibes, headquarters in 1922 of that First National Contest of Cante Jondo or Cante Primitivo Andaluz, so full of the memory of Lorca

Durante el verano, este espacio inigualable, se transforma en la sede del Festival de Granada, ideal para espectáculos de baile. Mi espectáculo, la razón por la que fui unos días a Granada, era “Picasso y la Danza, un encuentro con Lorca en Granada” última creación coreográfica de Andrés Marín para conmemorar el cincuentenario del fallecimiento del pintor malagueño y universal. Último proyecto también, en este caso sin posibilidades de continuidad,  del gran cineasta Carlos Saura, que falleció poco antes de su estreno y la labor de dirección artística fue retomada por su hijo Carlos Saura Medrano. Al final fue un encuentro Picasso – Lorca – Saura, con los músicos, cante, elenco de baile e invitados de Andrés Marín, para poner música y danza a cuadros picassianos y poemas lorquianos.  Un verdadero state of the arts. ¿Imaginan esto, en una noche de luna de agosto, en los jardines del Generalife, pletóricos de aromas nazaríes? ¡No es posible! Hay que estar allí.

During the summer, this unique space is transformed into the headquarters of the Granada Festival, ideal for dance shows. My show, the reason why I went to Granada for a few days, was “Picasso and Dance, an encounter with Lorca in Granada”, the latest choreographic creation by Andrés Marín to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the Malaga and universal painter. Also last project, in this case without possibilities of continuity, of the great filmmaker Carlos Saura, who died shortly before its premiere and the work of artistic direction was taken up by his son Carlos Saura Medrano. In the end it was a Picasso – Lorca – Saura meeting, with the musicians, singing, dance cast and guests of Andrés Marín, to put music and dance to Picasso paintings and Lorca poems.  A true state of the arts. Can you imagine this, on a moonlit night in August, in the Generalife gardens, full of Nasrid aromas? It’s not possible! You have to be there.

La danza estuvo acompañada de guitarras y cantes flamencos, cantes mestizos a los que en origen las músicas árabes  no le son ajenas. Músicas de Manuel de Falla, Eric Satie, Igor Stravinsky. Y es que Picasso mantuvo una estrecha relación con el flamenco hasta sus últimos días, fue el creador de la escenografía de El Sombrero de Tres Picos de Manuel de Falla  para los ballets Rusos de Dhiagilev. Sin olvidar que Picasso estuvo casado con una bailarina de estos ballets, Olga Khokhlova.

The dance was accompanied by guitars and flamenco songs, mestizo songs to which Arab music is not foreign in origin. Music by Manuel de Falla, Eric Satie, Igor Stravinsky. And Picasso maintained a close relationship with flamenco until his last days, he was the creator of the scenography of The Three-Pointed Hat by Manuel de Falla for Dhiagilev’s Russian ballets. Without forgetting that Picasso was married to a dancer from these ballets, Olga Khokhlova.

Where do the Nasrid aromas of Granada begin and end?

Sabemos cuando empezaron y sabemos que nunca acabarán, que son eternos.

We know when they began and we know that they will never end, that they are eternal.

A menos que un día se cumpla la leyenda de la Puerta de la Justicia de la Alhambra: El día que la mano de su arco exterior agarre la llave de su arco interior, la Alhambra caerá, porque el fin del mundo habrá llegado.

Unless one day the legend of the Gate of Justice of the Alhambra comes true: The day the hand of its outer arch grabs the key of its inner arch, the Alhambra will fall, because the end of the world will have arrived.

Granada no es solo un crisol de arte e historia. También lo es de hermosas leyendas nazaríes. Leyendas que en el siglo XIX, un escritor norteamericano enamorado de España y en particular de la Alhambra, Washington Irving, recopiló desde la transmisión oral secular, en un libro traducido a centenares de lenguas: Los Cuentos de la Alhambra.

Granada is not only a melting pot of art and history. It is also one of beautiful Nasrid legends. Legends that in the 19th century, an American writer in love with Spain and in particular with the Alhambra, Washington Irving, compiled from secular oral transmission, in a book translated into hundreds of languages: The Tales of the Alhambra.
