COLOMBIAN NAVY COMMEMORATED THE NIGHT OF SAN JUAN

El día de ayer, 24 de junio, la Armada de Colombia junto a autoridades civiles y militares así como representantes de la academia, conmemoraron sus 202 años de la “Noche de San Juan”.

Yesterday, June 24, the Colombian Navy together with civil and military authorities as well as representatives of the academy, commemorated its 202 years of the «Night of San Juan».

Diferentes eventos se desarrollaron desde las 08:00 de la mañana en la ciudad de Cartagena para recalcar esta importante gesta histórica, desarrollada el 24 de junio de 1821, en una noche de San Juan, donde tropas independentistas lideradas por José Padilla López entraron a Cartagena de Indias con el objetivo de iniciar la toma de la ciudad, que desde 1815 había estado bajo control realista. El éxito de esta hazaña histórica fue el último golpe militar necesario para la expulsión definitiva de las tropas realistas del Caribe neogranadino.

Different events took place from 08:00 in the morning in the city of Cartagena to highlight this important historical feat, developed on June 24, 1821, on a night of San Juan, where independentist troops led by José Padilla López entered Cartagena. de Indias with the aim of beginning the capture of the city, which since 1815 had been under royalist control. The success of this historic feat was the last military coup necessary for the final expulsion of the royalist troops from the New Granadan Caribbean.

El homenaje preparado en este 2023 se dio inicio con un desfile militar por las principales calles del Centro Histórico, donde participaron hombres y mujeres de la Armada de Colombia, Profesionales Oficiales de la Reserva Naval, integrantes del Batallón de Cadetes de la Escuela Naval de Cadetes «Almirante Padilla» y representantes del Centro de Promoción Cultural y Turístico Getsemaní Vivo, quienes representaron personajes históricos de la época evocando la historia; seguido de una ofrenda floral ante el Busto del Máximo Líder Naval, José Padilla López, ubicado en la Plaza de los Héroes, para rendirle homenaje a nuestro Gran Almirante y a los hombres que bajo su mando libraron esta batalla.

The tribute prepared in 2023 began with a military parade through the main streets of the Historic Center, where men and women from the Colombian Navy, Professional Officers from the Naval Reserve, members of the Cadet Battalion of the Naval Cadet School participated. «Almirante Padilla» and representatives of the Getsemaní Vivo Cultural and Tourist Promotion Center, who represented historical figures of the time evoking history; followed by a floral offering before the Bust of the Maximum Naval Leader, José Padilla López, located in the Plaza de los Héroes, to pay homage to our Grand Admiral and the men who fought this battle under his command.

Himnos y marchas entonadas por la Banda de Músicos y la Banda de Guerra de la Escuela Naval, llamaron la atención de propios y turistas, quienes apreciaron el destacamento.

Hymns and marches sung by the Band of Musicians and the War Band of the Naval Academy, drew the attention of locals and tourists, who appreciated the detachment.

Posteriormente, los asistentes ampliaron sus conocimientos de esta gesta histórica en el conversatorio «La Noche de San Juan» desarrollado en el Museo Naval del Caribe con la participación del Vicealmirante (RA) José William Porras, el Contralmirante (RA) Jairo Cardona, el doctor Pedro Claver Covo y el arquitecto e historiador Gonzalo Zúñiga Ángel, moderado por el profesor Jorge Alberto Burgos García.

Subsequently, the attendees expanded their knowledge of this historic feat in the discussion «La Noche de San Juan» held at the Caribbean Naval Museum with the participation of Vice Admiral (RA) José William Porras, Rear Admiral (RA) Jairo Cardona, Dr. Pedro Claver Covo and the architect and historian Gonzalo Zúñiga Ángel, moderated by Professor Jorge Alberto Burgos García.

En este espacio se presentó la cartilla “Padilla, la noche de San Juan y la independencia definitiva de Cartagena” del Instituto de Patrimonio y Cultura de Cartagena, basada en artículos de la revista Bicentenario Cartagena de Indias 1811-2011, así como el conversatorio “Reflexiones en torno a la independencia de Cartagena” moderado por la Historiadora Mabel Vergel con la participación de la historiadora Adineth Vargas Hernández y la estudiante de Doctorado de Historia Lorena Guerrero.

In this space, the booklet «Padilla, the night of San Juan and the definitive independence of Cartagena» of the Institute of Heritage and Culture of Cartagena was presented, based on articles from the Bicentennial Cartagena de Indias 1811-2011 magazine, as well as the conversation » Reflections on the independence of Cartagena” moderated by the Historian Mabel Vergel with the participation of the historian Adineth Vargas Hernández and the History PhD student Lorena Guerrero.

La jornada cerró con la presentación de la Coral de Tierra Bomba conformada por niños y niñas de esta isla, quienes con su talento amenizaron esta memorable fecha.
