Vicente Ferrer, the man from India

Hoy traemos a Culturas del Mundo a Vicente Ferrer, una de esas pocas personas con vida fascinante,   entregada a los más vulnerables, pionero en una gran transformación social en el gran subcontinente indio, con un legado de gran reconocimiento mundial. Una de esas personas que pasan a la historia por haber dedicado su vida a hacer el bien de la forma más generosa.

Today we bring to World Cultures Vicente Ferrer, one of those few people with a fascinating life, dedicated to the most vulnerable, a pioneer in a great social transformation in the great Indian subcontinent, with a legacy of great global recognition. One of those people who go down in history for having dedicated their lives to doing good in the most generous way.

Vicente Ferrer fue un barcelonés nacido en 1920. Nadie, ni él mismo, hubiera podido prever que aquel adolescente, casi un niño, que se afilió al Partido obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM) en tiempos convulsos, que con dieciséis años luchó en la Guerra Civil española, estuvo en la batalla del Ebro y en la retirada forzosa hacia Francia del ejército republicano. En Francia estuvo internado en un campo de concentración  en Argelès sur Mer; luego fue devuelto por las tropas francesas a la policía franquista en Hendaya e internado en otro campo de concentración en Betanzos durante todo el año 1939.

Vicente Ferrer was a Barcelona native born in 1920. Nobody, not even he himself, could have foreseen that that teenager, almost a child, who joined the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification (POUM) in turbulent times, who at the age of sixteen fought in the War Spanish civil, she was in the battle of the Ebro and in the forced retreat towards France of the Republican army. In France he was interned in a concentration camp in Argelès sur Mer; He was then returned by French troops to the Francoist police in Hendaye and interned in another concentration camp in Betanzos throughout 1939.

Podría como tantos otros haber sido fusilado, pero estaba predeterminado a realizar una misión humanitaria y pionera. Mucha huella tuvieron que dejar en él los horrores de una guerra entre hermanos, que le llevaron en 1944 a ingresar en la Compañía de Jesús.  Todo un cambio, toda una premonición. Del POUM, un partido de extrema izquierda a profesar como Jesuita, a convertirse en el Padre Ferrer a los veinticuatro años.

He could have been shot like so many others, but he was determined to carry out a humanitarian and pioneering mission. The horrors of a war between brothers must have left a great mark on him, which led him in 1944 to enter the Society of Jesus.  Quite a change, quite a premonition. From the POUM, a far-left party, to profess as a Jesuit, to becoming Father Ferrer at the age of twenty-four.

Y así, en 1952 llegó con la Orden a la India,  como misionero jesuita. Como él decía, un vuelco definitivo en su vida. Fue tomar tierra en el gran subcontinente indio y darse cuenta de que la India era su patria para siempre. Y que su misión definitiva era cambiar las condiciones de vida de los más vulnerables de India, los sin casta, los Dhalits. Se dio cuenta de que el ejercicio de la espiritualidad estaba en la acción. De que la acción sería su modo de oración.

And so, in 1952 he arrived with the Order to India, as a Jesuit missionary. As he said, a definitive change in his life. It was landing on the great Indian subcontinent and realizing that India was his homeland forever. And that his ultimate mission was to change the living conditions of the most vulnerable in India, the casteless, the Dhalits. He realized that the exercise of spirituality was in action. That action would be his mode of prayer.

Asi, desde su misión en el estado de Maharasthra, fue adquiriendo conciencia de la miseria que le rodeaba y fue creciendo en la idea de construir un mundo mejor, mediante la acción inmediata buena, la única que podía cambiar vidas desdichadas y abandonadas a una terrible suerte, por el hecho ancestral de las castas.

Thus, since his mission in the state of Maharasthra, he became aware of the misery that surrounded him and grew in the idea of ​​building a better world, through immediate good action, the only one that could change unhappy and abandoned lives to a terrible one. luck, due to the ancestral fact of castes.

Las castas habían sido abolidas sobre el papel en 1947, en la primera Constitución de la India independiente. Pero de ahí a cambiar la realidad, había no un trecho, un abismo. Y en ese abismo se metió Vicente Ferrer, creando escuelas, construyendo casas, creando puestos de trabajo, respetando siempre las creencias y prácticas religiosas de las gentes.

Castes had been abolished on paper in 1947, in the first Constitution of independent India. But from there to changing reality, there was not a stretch, but an abyss. And Vicente Ferrer stepped into that abyss, creating schools, building houses, creating jobs, always respecting the religious beliefs and practices of the people.

No tardó en alcanzar tanto reconocimiento entre los campesinos como animadversión entre las clases económicas y políticas, que se sintieron amenazadas con su labor, hasta el punto de lograr una orden de expulsión del país del Padre Vicente.  Una orden que hizo mucho ruido y movilización por parte de campesinos, algunos intelectuales y religiosos hindúes. Una movilización de 30.000 personas en protesta de la expulsión que se materializó en una marcha de 250 kilómetros, desde Manmad a Bombay. Era el año 1968. Vicente Ferrer tenía 48 años.

It did not take long for him to achieve both recognition among the peasants and animosity among the economic and political classes, who felt threatened by his work, to the point of obtaining an order to expel Father Vicente from the country.  An order that made a lot of noise and mobilization on the part of peasants, some intellectuals and Hindu religious people. A mobilization of 30,000 people in protest of the expulsion that materialized in a 250-kilometer march, from Manmad to Bombay. The year was 1968. Vicente Ferrer was 48 years old.

Tanto ruido llamó la atención de la prensa. La revista inglesa Current, envió a ver que pasaba con ese jesuita español que estaba revolucionando el estado de Maharasthra a la joven periodista Anne Perry. Otro punto de inflexión en la vida del Padre Ferrer.

So much noise caught the attention of the press. The English magazine Current sent the young journalist Anne Perry to see what was happening with that Spanish Jesuit who was revolutionizing the state of Maharasthra. Another turning point in the life of Father Ferrer.

Contra todo pronóstico, Anne Perry y Vicente Ferrer se enamoraron mientras el ruido de la expulsión llegaba hasta la mismísima Presidenta de India, Indhira Gandhi, quién sí reconoció la labor del misionero. Puso fin a la tensión declarando que “El Padre Vicente Ferrer marchará al extranjero para unas cortas vacaciones y será bien recibido otra vez en India”.

Against all odds, Anne Perry and Vicente Ferrer fell in love while the noise of the expulsion reached the President of India herself, Indhira Gandhi, who did recognize the missionary’s work. He put an end to the tension by declaring that “Father Vicente Ferrer will go abroad for a short vacation and will be welcomed back in India.”

Eso sí, relegado a una de las zonas más empobrecidas de India,  el distrito de Anantapur, en el estado de Andhra Pradesh, sur de India.

En 1970 el Padre Ferrer salió de la Compañía de Jesús para casarse con Anne Perry y se estableció, ya sin el apoyo de la Orden en una zona árida, pobre, olvidada. Juntos y solos, los Ferrer se enfrentaban a un reto sin precedentes. Hacía falta un milagro para que la nueva aventura pudiera prosperar.

In 1970, Father Ferrer left the Society of Jesus to marry Anne Perry and settled, now without the support of the Order, in an arid, poor, forgotten area. Together and alone, the Ferrers faced an unprecedented challenge. A miracle was needed for the new adventure to prosper.

Casi treinta años después / Almost thirty years later….

Casi treinta años después, en 1998-99 pasé medio año como voluntaria en Rural Development Trust, la sede en Anantapur de la Fundación Vicente Ferrer, en España con sede en Barcelona.

Almost thirty years later, in 1998-99 I spent half a year as a volunteer at the Rural Development Trust, the Anantapur headquarters of the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, in Spain with headquarters in Barcelona.

El milagro se había producido. En las comarcas del distrito de Anantapur se habían construido unas 30.000 viviendas en aldeas tribales. Cerca de 1700 escuelas. El terreno árido se había transformado en fértil y se habían plantado unos 2.700.000 árboles, parte de bosque, parte frutales. Gracias a la instalación de sistemas de regadío, canalizando las lluvias monzónicas  recogidas en presas florecían cultivos de cacahuete, algodón y maíz.

The miracle had occurred. Around 30,000 houses had been built in tribal villages in the Anantapur district. Nearly 1700 schools. The arid land had been transformed into fertile and some 2,700,000 trees had been planted, part forest, part fruit trees. Thanks to the installation of irrigation systems, channeling the monsoon rains collected in dams, peanut, cotton and corn crops flourished.

Tres hospitales generales, uno dedicado a enfermos de sida, un centro de planificación familiar y atención post natal. Catorce clínicas rurales, atención a niños sordos y ciegos. Centros de capacitación de la mujer, los sanghams, ayudándolas a emprender pequeños negocios que aparte de ayudar a la economía familiar son un sistema para crecer en autoestima. Becas de estudio para después de la educación primaria. Sistemas de pensiones.

Three general hospitals, one dedicated to AIDS patients, a family planning center and post-natal care. Fourteen rural clinics, serving deaf and blind children. Women’s training centers, sanghams, helping them start small businesses that, apart from helping the family economy, are a system to grow in self-esteem. Study scholarships for after primary education. Pension systems.

Y sobre todo y más difícil. Cambiar la mentalidad sobre los dhalits, empezando por ellos mismos, siguiendo por los campesinos  y aldeanos de otras castas, por las autoridades locales, distritales y del estado.

And above all and more difficult. Change the mentality about the dhalits, starting with themselves, continuing with the peasants and villagers of other castes, and with the local, district and state authorities.

Hablamos de haber cambiado la vida a cerca de tres millones de personas.

We talk about having changed the lives of nearly three million people.

Todo ello organizado en función de la ayuda, de la eficacia, contando siempre con las personas locales sabiamente organizadas desde la dirección en Anantapur, a las delegaciones  de todas y cada una de las aldeas. Siempre en función de crear puestos de trabajo que terminaran con las terribles migraciones a los suburbios de las macro ciudades indias donde desaparecía toda idea de compromiso social.  

All this organized based on help, efficiency, always counting on local people wisely organized from the management in Anantapur, to the delegations of each and every one of the villages. Always in order to create jobs that would end the terrible migrations to the suburbs of the Indian macro cities where all idea of ​​social commitment disappeared.  

Desde que tuve el privilegio de conocer y compartir tantas cosas que también cambiaron mi visión de la vida hasta hoy han seguido sucediendo muchas cosas.

Since I had the privilege of knowing and sharing so many things that also changed my vision of life, many things have continued to happen until today.

Como la ampliación de la zona de actividad a otros distritos de Andhra Pradesh y al trabajo con otras castas. Y más recientemente  la instalación de la Fundación en Nepal y su  Lanzamiento del Manifiesto por la Infancia. Hay mucha infancia vulnerable en Nepal y mucho trabajo por hacer para eliminar el trabajo infantil y los matrimonios de niñas.

Like expanding the area of ​​activity to other districts of Andhra Pradesh and working with other castes. And more recently the installation of the Foundation in Nepal and its Launch of the Manifesto for Children. There are many vulnerable children in Nepal and much work to be done to eliminate child labor and girl marriages.

Veo en el último número de la revista Anantapur, que por primera vez la Fundación ha tomado acción en España, a favor de los damnificados por la DANA en Valencia, en una acción llamada Reconstruir la Esperanza.

I see in the latest issue of Anantapur magazine, that for the first time the Foundation has taken action in Spain, in favor of those affected by DANA in Valencia, in an action called Reconstruct Hope.

Y unas páginas más adelante un artículo sobre la irrupción de los sanghams de mujeres en la banca, en un paso más adelante en su emancipación: La gestión de sus propios ahorros por medio de cooperativas bancarias.  Con lo que esto significa no solo en el emprendimiento femenino, también en el desarrollo social y económico de las aldeas.

And a few pages later an article about the emergence of women’s sanghams in banking, a step further in their emancipation: The management of their own savings through banking cooperatives.  With what this means not only in female entrepreneurship, but also in the social and economic development of the villages.

El empoderamiento femenino en un país como India tiene mucho que decir en la reducción de la idea machista sobre el papel de la mujer. Como dice Sivamma, una de las líderes: “Nuestros maridos están dándose cuenta de que somos iguales a ellos”.

Female empowerment in a country like India has a lot to say in reducing the sexist idea about the role of women. As Sivamma, one of the leaders, says: “Our husbands are realizing that we are equal to them.”

Lo que he escrito aquí es parte del legado de Vicente Ferrer, el Padre Ferrer, a quién todos siguieron llamando Padre hasta el fin de sus días. Y con razón. Padre de una ingente obra social que ya ha producido imitadores en otras partes de India, ese inmenso y superpoblado país, lleno de contrastes sociales, rico en historia y civilizaciones.

What I have written here is part of the legacy of Vicente Ferrer, Father Ferrer, whom everyone continued to call Father until the end of his days. And rightly so. Father of an enormous social work that has already produced imitators in other parts of India, that immense and overpopulated country, full of social contrasts, rich in history and civilizations.
