THE STORY OF CARLITOS, ANOTHER WITHOUT PAPERS ON EUROPEAN LANDS…

Todo empieza con un viaje normal, básico, el de conocer tierras europeas, ya que para mi siempre fue un sueño visitar Europa junto a mi entonces esposa. Me refiero a marzo de 2022 en que emprendimos esta gran aventura hacia a Barcelona, para luego conocer esta cosmopolita ciudad, su cultura, costumbres y todo lo que esta bella ciudad a orillas del mediterráneo tiene para ofrecer a quienes la visitan.

It all starts with a normal, basic trip, to see European lands, since for me it was always a dream to visit Europe with my then wife. I am referring to March 2022, when we embarked on this great adventure to Barcelona, ​​to later get to know this cosmopolitan city, its culture, customs and everything that this beautiful city on the shores of the Mediterranean has to offer to those who visit it.

Al cabo de unos días gracias a unos familiares del esposo de mi madre, recibimos una invitación para visitar Bruselas, la capital de Bélgica, una ciudad organizada que a mi modo de ver fue una visita muy agradable, esto gracias a la hospitalidad y el tiempo empleado para conocer los sitios históricos de esta ciudad, que alberga el Parlamento Europeo. Luego pasamos a visitar París, tomamos un autobús desde la capital belga y a tan solo unas tres horas, llegamos a la ciudad luz, el clima lamentablemente no nos acompañó, mucho frío, mucha lluvia y una estancia corta no nos permitieron adentrarnos más en esa urbe famosa mundialmente por su historia y museos además de su estructura arquitectónica.

After a few days, thanks to some relatives of my mother’s husband, we received an invitation to visit Brussels, the capital of Belgium, an organized city that in my opinion was a very pleasant visit, thanks to the hospitality and time used to learn about the historical sites of this city, which is home to the European Parliament. Then we went to visit Paris, we took a bus from the Belgian capital and after only about three hours, we arrived at the city of light, unfortunately the weather was not with us, very cold, a lot of rain and a short stay did not allow us to go further into that city famous worldwide for its history and museums as well as its architectural structure.

Regresamos a la ciudad condal como se conoce a Barcelona en Catalunya y en un momento inesperado la todavía esposa mia e influenciada por sus familiares, me plantea la posibilidad de probar suerte quedándonos en España en busca de mejores oportunidades y calidad de vida, en principio no me gusto nada la idea, es decir me pareció una idea descabellada y fuera de base, porque en nuestro país estábamos muy bien, no nos sobraba el dinero pero teníamos todo para ser un hogar suficiente, con dificultades como todos los demás hogares, pero no nos hacía falta nada.

We returned to the city of Barcelona, ​​as Barcelona is known in Catalonia, and at an unexpected moment, still my wife and influenced by her relatives, she raised the possibility of trying our luck by staying in Spain in search of better opportunities and quality of life, in principle, not I did not like the idea at all, that is to say, it seemed to me a crazy idea and out of base, because in our country we were very well, we did not have money to spare but we had everything to be a sufficient home, with difficulties like all other homes, but not we needed nothing.

Decidimos junto con la todavía esposa mia, buscar una calidad de vida diferente y mejores oportunidades, a sabiendas de que la situación para el inmigrante en principio es compleja por la documentación legal. Yo sabía que las opciones eran, hacer el tiempo es decir los dos o tres años para solicitar papeles, pedir asilo o en su defecto hacer pareja de hecho que es el caso más “sencillo”, (aparentemente) pero es importante decir que para este último «recurso» hay que contar con mucha suerte porque como todo negocio, te encuentras con personas que te piden mucho dinero a cambio de hacer este trámite, como también hay muchas personas que se aprovechan de la situación y necesidad del inmigrante.

Together with my still wife, we decided to look for a different quality of life and better opportunities, knowing that the situation for the immigrant is complex in principle due to legal documentation. I knew that the options were, take the time, that is to say, the two or three years to request papers, request asylum or, failing that, become a domestic partner, which is the «simple» case, (apparently) but it is important to say that for this Last «resort» you have to be very lucky because like any business, you come across people who ask you for a lot of money in exchange for doing this process, as there are many people who take advantage of the immigrant’s situation and need.

Antes de emprender este camino me tome el tiempo de preguntarle a la todavía mi esposa, que en aquella época era la mujer de mi vida por quien haría todo lo posible para hacerla sentir una reina y que amaba mucho, que pasaría con nuestro hogar y relación si yo no encontraba trabajo al cabo de uno, dos, tres o cuatro meses, es importante resaltar que la suerte de las personas es diferente, esta vez me tocó a mi como se dice popularmente “Bailar con la más fea”.

Before embarking on this path, I took the time to ask my still-wife, who at that time was the woman of my life for whom I would do everything possible to make her feel like a queen and who I loved very much, what would happen to our home and relationship If I couldn’t find a job after one, two, three or four months, it’s important to highlight that people’s luck is different, this time it was my turn, as they say “Dance with the ugliest”.

Llegamos, mi suegra y mi amado hijo de 6 años de nuevo a Barcelona en el mes de julio del año anterior, yo muy ilusionado de lo que podría encontrar en este país pero tambien con algo de incertidumbre de saber que deje toda mi estabilidad, mi familia y trabajo por esta aventura, pero estaba consciente de que aposte todo con el gran riesgo de perderlo todo. Pero como decimos en mi país “Si no arriesgas un huevo no ganas un pollo”.

My mother-in-law and my beloved 6-year-old son arrived back in Barcelona in July of the previous year. I was very excited about what I could find in this country but also with some uncertainty knowing that I would leave all my stability, my family and work for this adventure, but I was aware that I bet everything with the great risk of losing everything. But as we say in my country «If you don’t risk an egg you don’t win a chicken».

Pasaron los días y los meses y no encontraba un trabajo estable, sin documentación que me permitiera ayudar a solventar los altos costos que tiene el sostener un alquiler de piso y todo lo demás, como alimentación, servicios etc.

Days and months went by and I couldn’t find a stable job, without documentation that would allow me to help pay for the high costs of supporting a flat rental and everything else, such as food, services, etc.

Tal cual como lo predije y se lo hice saber a la todavía esposa pasaron 4 meses y solo trabaja como CM de un pequeño estudio de gimnasio que recién empezaba pero al cual estoy muy agradecido porque recién llegado a la ciudad me dieron la oportunidad de laborar y de llevar algo muy mínimo para mi casa pero importante.

Just as I predicted and I let my still wife know, 4 months have passed and she only works as CM of a small gym studio that was just starting up but to which I am very grateful because as soon as I arrived in the city they gave me the opportunity to work and to bring something very minimal for my house but important.

En octubre del año pasado pasó lo que tenía que pasar, o tal vez lo que no tenía que pasar….. No encuentro las palabras exactas para describirlo, pero mi principal apoyo aquí en Barcelona la todavía esposa mía, se sienta a hablar conmigo, para básicamente decirme: «que la relación no iba más». Fue «un riego de agua helada porque siendo honesto no lo esperaba», me refiero a que pasara tan pronto luego de escasos meses de haber llegado.

In October of last year, what had to happen happened, or perhaps what didn’t have to happen… I can’t find the exact words to describe it, but my main support here in Barcelona, ​​still my wife, sits down to talk with me, to basically tell me: «that the relationship was no more». It was «an irrigation of icy water because to be honest I didn’t expect it», I mean that it would happen so soon after a few months of arriving.

De pronto me encontre desorientado, sin saber cómo actuar ni mucho menos hacia donde mirar y pedir apoyo.. Conocía muy pocas personas y esto significaba que tendría que salir del piso para buscar otro sitio para vivir.

Suddenly I found myself disoriented, not knowing how to act, much less where to look and ask for support. I knew very few people and this meant that I would have to leave the apartment to find another place to live.

Las razones básicamente eran porque ella sentía que le estaba yendo muy bien y comenzó a ver que las mujeres tienen mejor suerte en el trabajo que los hombres, empezó a ver dinero y yo por mi parte aportaba muy poco al piso y el conocer muchas cosas nuevas fueron el caldo de cultivo perfecto, para tirar a la basura sin mas ni mas 8 años de relación, un hogar y quitarle la oportunidad a un niño de crecer como debe ser junto con sus padres.

The reasons were basically because she felt that she was doing very well and she began to see that women have better luck at work than men, she began to see money and I contributed very little to the apartment and learned many new things. They were the perfect breeding ground, to throw away 8 years of relationship, a home and take away the opportunity for a child to grow up as it should be together with their parents.

Con mucha entereza afronte la situación, seguí buscando oportunidades de trabajo y en noviembre obtuve un trabajo de vendedor de gafas de sol en el Centro Comercial el Triangle en el que solo estuve 20 días trabajando, el resto de días del mes no me siguieron llamando de aquella empresa y al iniciar el mes de diciembre me contactan para cobrar el sueldo y solo recibí 75 Euros, que solo era la comisión de venta de seis  gafas que logre vender durante ese tiempo, el sueldo mínimo base era de 200 euros. Luego me entero que el dueño de este negocio acostumbra contratar gente inmigrante y justamente hace el mismo proceso que hizo conmigo, los contrata, les promete cosas positivas y a la hora de pagar los sueldos termina despidiendo a los empleados para no pagarles el sueldo completo.

I faced the situation with great integrity, I continued looking for job opportunities and in November I got a job as a sunglasses seller at the Triangle Shopping Center where I only worked 20 days, the rest of the month they did not keep calling me back that company and at the beginning of December they contacted me to collect my salary and I only received 75 Euros, which was only the sales commission for six glasses that I managed to sell during that time, the basic minimum salary was 200 euros. Later I found out that the owner of this business usually hires immigrants and he does exactly the same process that he did with me, he hires them, promises them positive things and when it comes to paying the salaries he ends up firing the employees so as not to pay them their full salary.

El tema laboral / The labor issue

Llega el 2023 y mi situación continúa igual, solo hasta el mes de marzo y gracias al fútbol conozco una persona de ecuador que trabaja con reformas a pisos es decir construcción y me da la oportunidad por días de ser su ayudante en las obras (ayudante de construcción y repartidor de mercancía son los trabajos que más se dan para los hombres sin documentación). Un trabajo que nunca había hecho en mi vida pero que la experiencia fue provechosa porque es un aprendizaje nuevo.

2023 arrives and my situation continues the same, only until the month of March and thanks to football I know a person from Ecuador who works with apartment renovations, that is, construction, and he gives me the opportunity for days to be his assistant in the works (assistant of construction and merchandise delivery are the jobs that are given the most for men without documentation). A job that I had never done in my life but the experience was beneficial because it is a new learning.

En el mes de mayo me contactan para realizar una limpieza profunda de un piso, (apartamento) de una señora mayor muy amable que se salvó de fallecer por causa de un infarto, y ella necesitaba que su piso quedará impecable para ella vivir allí,el trato con esta señora fue muy bueno y tan contenta quedó que aparte del pago del dia trabajado, me obsequio algo más de dinero a modo de agradecimiento. Es algo que tenemos los latinos especialmente los colombianos el trato y el calor humano.

In the month of May they contacted me to carry out a deep cleaning of a flat, (apartment) of a very kind elderly lady who was saved from dying due to a heart attack, and she needed her flat to be impeccable for her to live there, the Dealing with this lady was very good and she was so happy that apart from the payment for the day worked, she gave me some more money as a thank you. It is something that we Latinos have, especially Colombians, the treatment and the human warmth.

Hasta la fecha de escritura de este texto, para mi no ha sido posible encontrar un trabajo estable que permita desarrollar una vida más llevadera en esta parte del mundo por la falta de documentación en los sitios donde dejo mi CV (Hoja de vida) me piden papeles.

Until the date of writing this text, it has not been possible for me to find a stable job that allows me to develop a more bearable life in this part of the world due to the lack of documentation in the places where I leave my CV (Resume) they ask me papers.

• Lo primero es saber y estar consciente de lo que te espera, no es fácil encontrar trabajo aquí, pero nada es imposible. The first thing is to know and be aware of what awaits you, it is not easy to find a job here, but nothing is impossible.
• Desde que llegas buscar la forma de empadronarte, esto te ayuda a obtener el servicio gratuito de salud que es muy bueno y el estar empadronado ayuda a comprobar el tiempo que tienes de residencia en el país, esto al momento de solicitar documentación legal. From the moment you arrive, look for a way to register, this helps you obtain the free health service that is very good and being registered helps to verify the time you have resided in the country, this when requesting legal documentation.
• Mucha paciencia puede que encuentres trabajo a la semana de haber llegado como también puede suceder que obtengas trabajo un par de meses después de la llegada a territorio europeo como lo mencione anteriormente la suerte de las personas es diferente. With a lot of patience, you may find a job a week after arriving, and it may also happen that you get a job a couple of months after arriving in European territory, as I mentioned before, the luck of people is different.
• Rodéate de personas que realmente veas que puedan guiarte y conectar con otras  para que te ayuden a obtener trabajo, así como hay personas malas, también hay personas muy buenas y de buen corazón dispuestas a ayudarte a obtener trabajo. Surround yourself with people you really see who can guide you and connect with others to help you get a job, just as there are bad people, there are also very good people with a good heart willing to help you get a job.
• Si vienes con tu familia es decir esposa e hijos, es primordial la paciencia, el respeto y la lealtad, ya que como hogar se busca un buen futuro y así debe de ser, la vida en pareja no es solo para los momentos buenos, también es saber gestionar y salir adelante en las situaciones más complejas. • Si tienes familia o amigos que puedan recibirte en este lado del mundo asegurate que no te fallarán, es complejo encontrar al principio por toda la burocracia y documentación que piden  una habitación o piso en alquiler. If you have family or friends who can receive you on this side of the world, make sure they will not let you down, it is difficult to find at first due to all the bureaucracy and documentation that ask for a room or flat for rent.
• Si no logras tus objetivos al momento de tomar la decisión de salir de tu país y contemplas regresar, hazlo al menos lo intentaste y tuviste la valentía de hacerlo, los grandes inversores y empresarios en el mundo han perdido grandes cantidades de dinero y ellos continúan en la búsqueda del éxito. Por eso la frase, insistir, persistir, resistir y nunca desistir. If you do not achieve your objectives when you make the decision to leave your country and contemplate returning, do it at least you tried and had the courage to do it, the great investors and businessmen in the world have lost large amounts of money and they continue in the search for success. Que podemos concluir / What can we conclude

Salir de tu país es una decisión de vida, hay que analizar con lujo de detalles los pro y los contra, porque no es lo mismo levantarte a trabajar todos los días, que levantarte a buscar trabajo, y más fuera de casa donde no tienes el apoyo de nadie para suplir las necesidades básicas, en los países europeos ten en cuenta que cada quien va a su propio rollo como se dice aqui y nadie esta pendiente a lo de nadie, suena cruel pero es así, por ende tómalo con calma analiza bien y ejecuta muy bien el plan que tienes para emigrar.

Leaving your country is a life decision, you have to analyze in great detail the pros and cons, because it is not the same to get up to work every day, than to get up to look for work, and even more outside the home where you do not have the nobody’s support to meet basic needs, in European countries keep in mind that everyone goes to their own thing as they say here and nobody is aware of anyone’s, it sounds cruel but it is so, therefore take it easy analyze well and execute very well the plan you have to emigrate.

Por último y no menos importante, debes tener los recursos suficientes para al menos sostener 6 meses sin trabajo sin recursos se hace mucho más complejo llevar la vida en Europa.

Last but not least, you must have enough resources to sustain at least 6 months without a job without resources it becomes much more complex to lead a life in Europe.

De todo esto puedo decir que a pesar de las situaciones que he vivido que son muchas pero que no alcanzo a escribirlas, ha sido una  gran experiencia de vida, me servirá para analizar con cabeza fría futuras decisiones que puedan afectar mi vida y mis aspiraciones, además porque he tomado trabajos que nunca pensé desarrollar y esto te forma como persona.

From all this I can say that despite the situations I have experienced, which are many but I cannot write them down, it has been a great life experience, it will help me to analyze with a cool head future decisions that may affect my life and my aspirations. also because I have taken jobs that I never thought to develop and this shapes you as a person.
